View northwest of the Rock Mill Covered Bridge originally built around 1849, rebuilt in 1880, and yet again shortly after 1900. A classic autumn setting above a gorge at the headwaters of the Hocking River. The bridge is located adjacent to the Rock Mill Grist Mill (constructed in 1824 and being restored as a private-public partnership coordinated by the Fairfield County Park District) within Stebelton Park near Lancaster, in Fairfield County, Ohio. The Rock Mill Covered Bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. Image = Ohio Covered Bridges Fairfield Rock Mill-2A 110716-110816 455-459 E-D N C1.jpg.

this seems like a fabulously unique design, Michael!! I wonder what the idea behind the open areas was … to protect it from strong winds while still keeping the riders dry? Whatever it was, it's a beauty … and a beautiful capture!!! l/f t

Wonderful covered bridge shot! I love the golden fall foliage in the background.
Michael Mazaika replied:
My favorite season of them all. Thank you, MM, for your gracious comment. - Mike
James Brunker
Beautiful shot of a fascinating looking structure!
Michael Mazaika replied:
Thanks, James. In visiting many of these bridges, I've learned that this design was also practical. The open, but protected, sides allowed the inside to keep relatively dry and to dry out, thus helping preserve the bridge. I hope you enjoy this ongoing series. - Mike
Barbara Jewell
