Description
Sepia toning lends an historic feel to this view facing the front porch of 108 West Church Street in Frederick, Maryland, and the statue of "Guess" guarding the home located directly adjacent to All Saints Episcopal Church. The building is the former residence of Dr. John Tyler built at the end of the 1700's and has also served for many years as the rectory of All Saints Church. The statue is said to have been taken away by Confederate soldiers, to be melted down for cannon balls, as they marched through the ransomed City on their way to the Civil War battles at South Mountain and Antietam. Legend also has it that the dog statue was named "Guess" in response to passers-by or visitors to the home inquiring of the dog's name.
