Description
Depictions of the fourteen Stations of the Cross are many, from ornate sculptures, bas reliefs, stained glass, mosaics, and paintings, to those more simple in their design and presentation. At Saint Peter the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Libertytown, MD, Stations of the Cross are presented outdoors leading to the Grotto of the Immaculate Conception located on the grounds adjacent to the church. Each Station's image is mounted as a wooden placard attached to an upright wooden beam, protected from above by an angled wooden frame. Rough-hewn nails placed in the shape of the Cross are embedded on the placard board above the image. A simple design in wood surrounded by trees, fitting for a carpenter's son. The Sixth Station is debated as to whether it has a Scriptural basis or represents tradition. Nevertheless, it depicts an encounter between Jesus and a compassionate Veronica, perhaps among the women of Jerusalem, who lovingly wipes the blood and sweat from His face as He carries the cross along the Via Dolorosa to Calvary.
