Description
Built by Mrs. Madeleine Vinton Dahlgren, widow of Admiral John A. Dahlgren inventor of the gun (cannon) that bears his name. The Chapel sits atop South Mountain along U.S. Route 40A between Middletown and Boonsboro, near the Frederick and Washington County lines. It is located across the road from the current Old South Mountain Inn which at the time during the late 1800's was Mrs. Dahlgren's residence. The Chapel was consecrated in 1884 as the Chapel of Saint Joseph of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Image = 2018-07-04 to 11-04 Misc Dahlgren Chapel-2 450-454 E-D M C1 FT B-4 PSP A-Sh.jpg.

Michael Mazaika replied:
I usually pass by the Chapel at the top of South Mountain on my way to the Antietam Battlefield. On this day with waning autumn colors the sky, as you observed, and light was worth the stop. Thanks, Reid; I'm always grateful for your encouragement and support. - Mike
