Description
The archway above one of the entrances to the grounds of Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA - the first college chartered in the United States. The charter, prepared by Dr. Benjamin Rush, Revolutionary War Patriot and signer to the Declaration of Independence, led to the establishment of the college in September 1783. John Dickinson, close friend to Dr. Rush for whom the college was named who served as the first Chairman of the Colleges Board of Trustees and one of its benefactors, described the school by the phrase "Tuta Libertas - a bulwark of liberty, understanding the need for the new Nation to be built on an educated citizenry".
